For the March release from theClub, we chose the 2007 Domenico Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has great fruit, smooth tannins and beat the pants off some very expensive Cabs in both our expert and consumer panels.
The 2007 Domenico Napa Valley Cab is born from the Riverview Ranch Vineyard in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. Because of Oak Knoll's proximity to San Pablo Bay, the climate is cooler and the grapes are able to mature longer on the vine without over-ripening (achieving phenolic ripeness alongside sugar ripeness). These conditions produce a wine that combines the fruit of American Cabs with the earthy-balance of a traditional Bordeaux.
The husband and wife team of Dominick & Gloria Chirichillo runs Domenico. Dominick began his winemaking career at the tender age of 8 in his New York basement under the tutelage of his Nonno (grandfather). With a start like that, it's no wonder that Domenico has won 265 medals and runs winemaking schools on both coasts. For more on Domenico, click here.
Tasting Notes: Blackberry, plum, tobacco and intriguing spice; full-bodied with easy tannins.
Side note: Dominick makes some fantastic Italian varietal wines and we will soon be featuring his 2007 Charbono in theCellar as well.
